Rockfleet Castle Trail

Additional Trails
19 km - moderate

A real treat for the heritage explorer. The trail passes Rockfleet Castle, former home of Granuaile/Grace O’Malley, the 16th century Pirate Queen. St Brendan the Navigator is commemorated at Killeen. There is a well there that bears the saints name. At Newfield the landlord James Hunter was assassinated in 1869.

The Greenway that carries the walker or cyclist back to Derrada was once a railway line that linked Westport and Achill Island, through Newport.
