Rocky Mountain Way
The trail affords magnificent views of Clew Bay, Croagh Patrick to the south and the heather clad slopes of the Nephin Mountains. From Glendahurk and Glenthomas and Glenamaddoo rushing mountain streams hurry onward to Clew bay.
Turf is still cut and saved on the bogs above the high trail. Depending on the time of year the hiker may see the footings of turf stacked in such a way to allow the drying winds to pass through.
This is blanket bog formed by the mosses and other bog forming plants that continue to grow each year one on top of another, in such a way to prevent oxygen permeating the lower stratums, thus creating what we call peat or turf.
